There are a lot of features in some CMS, so you will need to pick through each solution and decide if it is going to work for you. Here are some background issues to keep in mind.
- Appropriate – we have outlined the different levels of CMS for you. Don’t make the mistake of getting a system that is too complicated for your needs. If you do not need a feature, you will not use it, and therefore you will not learn it. Chances are an unused forum will be negative for your site rather than positive.
- User levels – work out early on how many people will use the system. Will they all be internal staff or will external people be able to contribute to the site. If they can, then you will need a system with good permissions, security and versioning so you can control content editing.
- User interface – like all the other eCommerce solutions, become familiar with the backend administration and the front-end design options before you pick one CMS to go forward with. As full CMS can be quite diverse, make sure you understand where the features you want are. They could come in the form of plug-ins that will require more installation work.
